Student shoots himself to death outside Florida high school

Nov. 15, 2017
The suicide occurred in the bus loop outside Lake Minneola High School in Minneola, Fla.

A student at Lake Minneola High School in Minneola, Fla., fatally shot himself Tuesday morning near the school’s bus loop during a fire drill.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the student, identified as Seth Sutherland, 17, had been separated from other students.

“It does not appear anyone actually witnessed it,” sheriff’s Lt. John Herrell says. “We have reason to believe this was a planned event, and this is really all I can say."

No one else was injured, authorities say.

The shooting occurred during a prescheduled fire drill for the school's 1,800 students. The campus is about 25 miles west of downtown Orlando.

The Sheriff’s Office posted news of the shooting on its Facebook page about 8:30 a.m.

“There has been one person injured from a gunshot at Lake Minneola High School. The school is secure at this time, and we have reason to believe it to be a self-inflicted shot,” the post said. “Lake Minneola High School and others in the area have been placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution as we continue to investigate. The school is secure, and more updates will be provided as they are available.”
