Lithia Springs High School instructor is being treated at an area hospital; authorities haven't said if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

A teacher has shot himself in the office of his classroom at Lithia Springs High School in Lithia Springs, Ga.

WXIA-TV reports that the teacher, an 18-year veteran of the Douglas County (Ga.) school district whose identity has not been disclosed, is in stable condition at an area hospital. Authorities have not said if the shooting was intentional or accidental.

Lithia Springs is about 20 miles west of Atlanta.

Officials with the district say the teacher was alone in his classroom when the shooting occurred around 7:15 a.m. Thursday, before the school day began.

Douglas County Police Sgt. Jesse Hambrick says a school staffer who has experience in medical emergencies found the wounded teacher.

"She called 911, and we were able to provide her with the assistance she needed until we arrived," Hambrick says.

No students witnessed the incident, police say. As they began arriving on campus, they were told that classes had been cancelled and were directed to the gym until transportation could be arranged. At one point, about 1,100 students were in the gym.

The district intends to resume classes at Lithia Springs on Friday, and grief counselors will be available.
