Eastern Oregon University (EOU), LaGrande, Ore., broke ground in August 2001 on a new science center. The building will be home to research and teaching laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices and support areas in a unified facility serving both EOU and regional science, health and natural-resource programs.

The $33.5 million project includes a 67,000-square-foot addition and a 30,000-square-foot renovation to the existing Badgley Hall.

The Oregon Legislature has voted to finance the construction using more than $14 million in bonds and $9 million in lottery-backed bonds that EOU will match with other revenue funds. The university hopes to raise an additional $2.5 million to $4 million for building enhancements.

The size of the current facility limited the ability to expand undergraduate science education for students. The new center not only will provide opportunities for students at EOU, but also will allow training and research in advanced-technologies opportunities in the regional area. EOU has cooperative partnerships with the OHSU nursing program, Oregon State University Agriculture Program, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Portland State University Engineering.

Architect for the project is Yost Grube Hall (Portland).
