2 dead, 8 injured in shooting at Brown University

The shooter remained at large Saturday night, and the Providence, R.I., campus was on lockdown.

A shooting Saturday at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, has left at least two dead and eight injured.  

The Providence Journal reports the shooter is not yet in custody Saturday night, and the campus remains on lockdown.

It is unknown how the shooter entered the Barus Brown and Holley Engineering Building at 184 Hope Street, but it is known that he exited onto the Hope Street side.

University President Christina H. Paxson said a person had been taken into custody, but after questioning was determined to not be the shooter.

Authorities are working to identify the two people killed in the shooting, 

Rhode Island Hospital said in a news release that it has eight patients:

  • Six patients are in critical but stable condition
  • One patient is in critical condition
  • One patient is in stable condition.
