One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting over the weekend in a parking lot on the campus of Worcester State University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

The Springfield Republican reports that Randy Melendez, Jr., 19, was fatally shot early Saturday. A 21-year-old man whose identity was not disclosed also was shot in the incident; he is expected to survive. Neither the victims nor the suspected assailant was enrolled as a student at Worcester State, the university says.

The suspected shooter remained at large Monday, authorities said. He is identified as Kevin Rodriguez, 18, and is wanted on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and armed assault with intent to murder.

Investigators believe the shooting occurred during a fight around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Police found two men with gunshot wounds, and both were brought to area hospitals for treatment.

The Worcester State campus was closed Saturday, and all campus events were canceled, including events associated with homecoming weekend and sporting events.

The university said the state police crime scene unit was on scene and referred further questions to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office.
