High school freshman shot to death after homecoming football game in Chicago suburb

A high school freshman in Country Club Hills, Illinois, was fatally shot over the weekend following his school's homecoming football game.

The Chicago Tribune reports that Marshawn Mitchell, 14, a student at Hillcrest High School, died Saturday after he was shot in the chest.

The shooting occurred near school property following Hillcrest’s homecoming game Friday night against Oak Forest High School.

Both schools are in the south suburbs of Chicago and part of Bremen High School District 228.

Police say shots were fired at about 9 p.m. near Hillcrest High. Officers were already in the area as officers dispersing a group of students near the school when the shots were heard.

“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the devastating loss of one of our Hillcrest High School students following a shooting incident that occurred on 175th Street,” Hillcrest High School said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this tragedy.”

The school says the shooting took place after the game concluded. The school canceled the homecoming dance that was scheduled for Saturday night.
