Two campus officers shot to death at Virginia college

A campus law enforcement officer and a campus safety officer at Bridgewater College have died, and a suspect in the shooting is in custody.

Two campus officers were shot to death Tuesday at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va.

CNN reports the victims were Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer JJ Jefferson

Virginia State Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Alexander Wyatt Campbell.. He has been charged with two felony counts of capital murder, one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony charge of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony,

 College President David Bushman, in a message on the school's Facebook page, called the shootings an "unspeakable tragedy."

"These officers were close friends, known to many of us as the 'dynamic duo.'" Bushman said. "John was JJ's best man in his wedding this year. They were beloved by students, faculty, and staff. I hurt for their families and loved ones, as I know we all do."

The Daily News-Record reports that Campbell is a former student at Bridgewater College and ran cross country.

When arrested, Campbell had a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was treated at a local hospital. treated and released. Investigators had not determined if he was shot by the Bridgewater College Police Officer or if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
