One police officer is dead, and another officer is in critical condition after a shooting near Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus. A suspect in the shooting also is dead.
ABC News reports that the officers — one with the Americus police department and one with the school's force — were called Wednesday to a domestic dispute at an off-campus apartment when they encountered a gunman.
Americus Police Officer Nicholas Smarr, 25, was dispatched to the apartment complex and Georgia Southwestern State University Officer Jodi Smith responded as backup. Gunshots were exchanged between the officers and the suspect. Both officers were shot, Scott said.
Smarr died from his injuries, and Smith was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
The suspect, Minquell Lembrick, was found dead Thursday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, WSB-TV reports. Lembrick's body was discovered after police entered a house in Americus where the man had barricaded himself.
Police say Lembrick was wanted on kidnapping charges, but the officers responding to the disturbance call were not aware of those charges and did not know that Lembeck would be present.
The university campus is situated in the center of Americus, so campus police officers often assist city police, says Mike Tracey, the police chief at Georgia Southwestern State.
