2 elementary schools in Atlanta are getting a major renovation

Aug. 31, 2020
The board has approved spending $22 million to overhaul Barack and Michelle Obama Academy and West Manor Elementary School.

The Atlanta school board has approved construction contracts totaling $22 million to renovate two elementary schools.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that board will spend up to $11 million each for building upgrades at Barack and Michelle Obama Academy and West Manor Elementary School.

Although Atlanta Public Schools has begun the year with virtual learning because of the coronavirus pandemic, the two schools have moved into temporary sites while construction takes place.

Barack and Michelle Obama Academy is being housed in the former Bethune Elementary School location. West Manor is using the former Fain Elementary School site.

Funds for the renovation project come from a one-cent sales tax that voters approved in 2016.
