Georgia district ready to carry out $13.5 million middle school renovation

May 18, 2020
The Fayette County district is upgrading the Booth Middle School campus, which eventually will be converted to a career/technical education facility.

The Fayette County (Ga.) district is ready to begin a $13.5 million renovation of the Booth Middle School campus in Peachtree City.

The Citizen reports that the school board has approved the project, which will be carried out in two phases. The district already has begun work on a new $46 million middle school that will replace the Booth campus.

The renovated Booth building will continue to be used in 2020-21 as a middle school; once the new campus is completed, the Booth facility will be converted into a center for career and technical education, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Total cost for the renovation, including furniture, safety and security features, architectural and engineering fees and the energy management system, totals $13.5 million.

The state will reimburse Fayette County about $6 million of the cost, but only if the existing building is renovated before the new middle school is finished in 2021.

Phase 1 is scheduled to be completed in time for the coming school year. Phase 2 of the project will be done next summer.

Phase 1 will include work on the west wing such as painting, floor coverings, ceiling tiles, lights, roofing and the HVAC system. It also includes replacing the roof on the older part of the school.

Phase 2 includes a more extensive renovation of the older portion of the school.

At the site of the new middle school, grading work has been completed and work on the footings is essentially ready to begin. Construction of the new school is expected to be complete in late 2021, says Mike Satterfield, the district's facilities director.
