Auburn-Washburn (Kan.) district wants to build a second middle school

Jan. 31, 2022
The new school would enable the district to move sixth-graders from elementary to middle school campuses.

The Auburn-Washburn (Kan.) district is looking to construct a second middle school.

Opening a second middle school would provide enough space to move sixth graders in the district to the middle schools, officials say.

The district's existing middle school, Washburn Rural Middle School, now accommodates only seventh and eighth grades, reports WIBW.com.

The district has scheduled a bond election in April, and it hopes voters will approve funding to build the middle school.

The ballot proposal seeks approval of a $145 million request. The bonds would pay for the new middle school, additional early childhood classrooms, and re-purposing of elementary spaces freed up by the departure of sixth-graders.

A second ballot question seeks $15 million for construction of a swimming pool at the high school.
