The Kaukauna (Wisconsin) Area School District has broken ground on a new Kaukauna Middle School

The Appleton Post-Crescent reports that the new school will replace the former River View Middle School.

Funding for the $169.2 million construction project comes from a bond proposal approved by voters in November 2024.

The district says the new middle school will have space for more than 1,200 students in grades five to eight. It will have classrooms and labs for science, technology, and culinary courses; spaces for student collaboration, project-based learning and performance; a commons/cafeteria, a three-court gym, and a fitness area for students and community use.

“This groundbreaking represents a shared investment in the future of our students and our community," says School Superintendent Mike Slowinski.

District leaders decided against trying to renovate River View MIddle because the facility no longer met student needs. The campus was less than half the recommended size for a school of its student capacity, and it had significant traffic safety and congestion problems.
