Citation recipient from the 2025 Architectural Portfolio: Seminary of the Southwest
Key Highlights
- A new lower commons and south entry enhance accessibility and invite exploration between key campus buildings.
- The project balances architectural innovation with theological intent to create an inspiring environment for learning and reflection.
The design challenge for the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, was both theological and architectural: to establish The Way, a meandering path of discovery that fosters connection, reveals opportunities and facilitates transformation. At street level, the new lower commons opens to a patio, and serves as an inviting threshold to The Way. By removing part of the old classroom wing, a south entry to the campus was created, inviting exploration between the library and existing classrooms. The exterior’s terracotta ribs transition into the media center. The ribs filter city views and modulate natural light.
