Greenest Colleges

Oct. 3, 2017
The Princeton Review uses school-reported data and student opinion to rank the top green college.

The College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine, has been ranked the top green college for 2017 by The Princeton Review.

The green rankings are part of The Review's “Guide to 375 Green Colleges, 2017,” which profiles higher-education institutions with the most exceptional commitments to sustainability.

Among the green distinctions that put College of the Atlantic at the top of the green list: It became the first carbon-neutral college in 2007; it owns and stewards 300 acres of forest and farmland that provide research and educational opportunities for students and faculty; and the its hands-on curriculum involves students in carrying out the commitment to become a fossil fuel-free campus by 2030.

The Princeton Review determines its rankings by collecting information on whether the quality of life for students on a campus is healthful and sustainable; how well a school is preparing students for employment in an increasingly green economy; and how environmentally responsible a school's policies are.

The Review also surveys students on how sustainability issues have influenced their education and life on campus; on the extent of administration and student support for environmental awareness and conservation efforts; and the visibility and influence of student environmental groups.

Here are The Princeton Review's Top 10 Green Colleges.
