One student and one visitor were found dead outside a residence hall in Grambling, La.

Two men—one a student and the other a campus visitor—were shot to death early Wednesday at Grambling State University in Grambling, La.

CNN reports that the victims' bodies were discovered in a courtyard between two residence halls. The victims have been identified as Earl Andrews, 23, a senior at Grambling from Farmerville, La.; and Monquiarius Caldwell, 23, also from Farmerville. Caldwell was not a Grambling student.

Authorities were searching for the shooter, who has not been identified.

"This tragic incident appears to have occurred between persons that knew each other, to some extent at least," says Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone.

Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, the shooting resulted form an altercation that started inside one of the nearby residence halls.

University President Rick Gallot issued a statement to the campus community expressing condolences to the families of the victims.

"We are working with authorities to do all that we can to ensure your safety on campus," Gallot said.

He characterized the shooting as an isolated incident, and said the campus is open for normal operations Wednesday and the rest of the week.

"After consultation with GSU Student Government Association leadership, we will proceed with our academic and event schedules as planned in the coming week, including all homecoming events," Gallot said. "You will see increased police and security this week, and we ask that you be patient with any related delays."

Grambling State, in northern Louisiana, has an enrollment of about 5,200 students.
