Police say a gunman in Berwyn, Illinois, fatally shot an assistant middle school principal and another person outside the school before he turned the gun on himself and took his own life.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the shooting took place Tuesday afternoon outside Lincoln Middle School in Berwyn, a western suburb of Chicago.

Authorities say Steven T. Lee, 54, died of a gunshot wound in the head; his death was ruled a suicide.

One victim was identified as Nerissa Lee, 46, assistant principal at Lincoln Middle. The identity of the other fatality, a woman, was not disclosed.

Authorities said the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, but could not confirm the nature of Nerissa Lee and Steven Lee's relationship.

Berwyn North School District 98 Superintendent Michelle Smith announced Lee's death in a message to the school district community.

“It is with great sadness that I announce to you that Nerissa Lee, Assistant Principal at Lincoln Middle School, lost her life in yesterday’s tragic shooting that occurred outside of Lincoln,” Lee said.

Shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to reports of gunfire near the school and found a man in a car firing reifle shots into another vehicle before fatally shooting himself, police said. He also fired shots at responding officers, who took cover but did not return fire.

No students were hurt in the shooting.

School was canceled on Wednesday, but is scheduled to resume on Thursday.
