Wauwatosa (Wis.) school district starts gun safety program for children and parents

July 8, 2022
The Be SMART effort will encourage parents "to normalize conversations about gun safety" and take steps to prevent child gun deaths and injuries.

The Wauwatosa (Wis.) district has approved use of a gun safety program that will teach children and parents about gun safety.

The Be SMART program is a nationwide effort to encourage adults to normalize conversations about gun safety and help prevent child gun deaths and injuries, reports The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Parents in the district have been advocating for the gun safety program after recent incident of gun violence in schools.

Earlier this year, the district began random searches and an increased police presence at Wauwatosa West High School after two students were caught with a box cutter and a handgun in the school.

The district's communication campaign will use resources from Be SMART to increase awareness and provide education to members of the community regarding gun safety, a spokesperson says.

The district will also continue to promote Speak Up, Speak Out, a program created by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety that seeks to empower, support and protect members of the Wisconsin educational community.
