A student at KIPP D.C. College Preparatory in Washington, D.C., was shot outside the school Monday afternoon, according to school officials.
The Washington Post reports that the student is in stable condition.
NBC Washington says the student, 18, was wounded in the arm. He was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not expected to be life-threatening.
The high school was placed on lockdown after the incident.
The school will be closed Tuesday and will reopen Wednesday. School officials said mental health services will be available on Wednesday. There will also be an increased police presence.
The shooting comes as frustration mounts over youth gun violence in Washington, D.C. Last week, a 17-year-old Roosevelt High School student was fatally shot in the school’s parking lot. Days before, a fifth-grader was hit by a stray bullet. Forty-three juveniles have been shot this year as of May 11, double the number at the same time last year
