Don Haskins K-8 School replaces 1 middle and 2 elementary schools.

The El Paso (Texas) District has held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the Don Haskins PK-8 School.

KTSM-TV reports that the new campus is the result of the consolidation of Lincoln Middle School and Roberts and Bond elementary schools.

District voters approved $44.3 million for the construction of the new building and the renovation of existing buildings at the Lincoln site.

Renovations to existing facilities include upgrades to HVAC, new electrical systems and aesthetic upgrades throughout the campus.

The campus is named for former University of Texas at El Paso basketball coach Don Haskins. He made history in 1966 when he started five African-American players in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game.

The team went on to defeat the University of Kentucky and win the national basketball championship.

Don Haskins PK-8 School was designed by GA Architecture. The general contractor is Urban Associates.
