The Lafayette Parish (Louisiana) School Board has approved a long-anticipated plan to consolidate three schools into a single facility.

KATC-TV reports that Paul Breaux Middle School, J.W. Faulk Elementary and Dr. Raphael Baranco Elementary will be merged under one roof, marking what officials are calling a transformative moment for the community.

The new K–8 facility will be constructed on the existing site of J. W. Faulk Elementary.

“This is a decision decades in the making,” said District 3 board member Josh Edmond. “Technology is changing, the way we travel is changing—yet our classrooms haven’t evolved in the same way."

Construction is expected to begin as soon as possible.

“What’s important to me is making certain that the community plays a part in all of this,” said District 4 board member Amy Trahan, who introduced the motion.
