Muncie, Ind., high school unveils $6 million athletic facility upgrades

Delta High School in Muncie, Ind., has unveiled a $6 million fitness center and other school improvements

The fitness center spans 37,000 square feet and two stories within the school, reports The Star Press

The district's Project 20 plan enabled the school to upgrade the weight room and construct an indoor track area.

School officials said the athletic spaces hadn't been updated since 1974, and had become too small and outdated for efficient use.

The school's main gym and auxiliary gym were also becoming cramped, and several sports teams had to share the area. When visiting teams came to play, they had to make long trips around the school to reach their facilities.

The weight room, which held about 15 to 20 athletes before updates, can now hold about 100.

Among the features of the athletics facility: an upgraded weight room; new locker rooms; a classroom for future enhancements, an athletic training office; wrestling room; and an indoor track area; batting cages; golf simulators; and storage spaces. On the upper floor of the fitness center is an indoor track facility. On the inside of the track, adjustable curtains enable the facility to bring in plenty of natural light.

Other improvements to the high school: added learning stairs in the commons areas. The commons area also has charging outlets for students, and a coffee shop.

Lockers within the commons area were also updated and are right next to the lunch room for easier supervision.
