Business school facility opens at Southern Utah University

Sept. 10, 2018
The Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business building is designed to accommodate innovative approaches to business education.

Southern Utah University in Cedar City has opened a 42,000-square-foot building that will house its business school.

University leaders say that the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business building has been designed to encourage participatory and practical business education and provides flexible learning spaces for greater collaboration.

“We are thrilled to have a new building that will help our programs grow as we continue exploring new opportunities for our business students,” says Mary Pearson, dean for the School of Business. “The new building will provide needed space for students, professors, and professionals to collaborate and experiment with business ideas, assignments, and projects.”

The building consists of 15 classrooms, 38 offices, study spaces, an investment learning lab, an entrepreneurship lab, and an incubator space.

One of the facility's innovative spaces will be the Larry H. and Gail Miller Family Center for Entrepreneurship. The center, designed to foster creativity, collaboration, and innovation, provides a place for students interested in starting their own company and learning to think like entrepreneurs.

“This is the first academic building, that I’m aware of, amongst all the regional universities in Utah that was funded primarily by donors,” says Southern Utah President Scott L Wyatt. “Our community has really come together to make this happen. We are grateful for donor support along with the Legislature’s approval of the building.”

Momentum for the new building gained steam in 2015, when the university received $7.5 million, the largest gift in the school’s history, from the Dixie and Anne Leavitt Foundation.

More than 1,000 students are enrolled in the School of Business. It offers undergraduate majors in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Hotel Resort and Hospitality Management, Management, and Marketing.  The business school offers graduate degrees in Accounting and Business Administration.
