Construction begins on new elementary in Reno, Nev.

May 15, 2018
The Washoe County district says Nick Poulakidas Elementary School will open in 2019 and relieve crowding at nearby campuses.

The Washoe County (Nev.) District has begun construction of a 745-student elementary school in Reno that will alleviate crowding in nearby schools and accommodate growth in the area.

KTVN-TV reports the district is holding a ceremonial groundbreaking today for Nick Poulakidas Elementary School.

The two-story building is expected to have an initial enrollment of more than 600 students attending when it opens in Fall 2019.

Construction officially began in March.

The building will be equipped with up-to-date security including a secure perimeter and single-point entry.

Interior lights will be controlled by motion sensors and will automatically adjust to daylight conditions.

The district's Double Diamond Elementary and Brown Elementary have more than 900 students each. Poulakidas will relieve crowding in both those schools

"It's going to take Double Diamond Elementary School off multitrack when it opens," says district spokesperson Riley Sutton. "It'll relieve the severe overcrowding at Brown elementary school, also give room for those communities to grow."

The architect is H + K Architects,  and the contractor is Q&D Construction.
