University of Central Florida's downtown Orlando campus delayed

The University of Central Florida hopes to open a downtown Orlando campus in the fall of 2018 — a year later than planned — and is proposing to construct a building with much less state money than previously sought.

The Orlando Sentinel says university officials disclosed the new timeline this week at a trustees meeting. The revised plan comes after Gov. Rick Scott vetoed state funding this summer for the project.

The plan calls for constructing a $60 million, 165,000-square-foot academic building across from the Center for Emerging Media on Livingston Street.

The university had asked the legislature to provide funds for the entire cost of the building. Now Provost Dale Whittaker said the plan is to ask the state for only $20 million. The rest of the money would come from $20 million in donations and $20 million from existing university funds.
