The Prince William County (Va.) district has broken ground on a $52.4 million middle school in the Potomac Shores planned community.

The district says that the school, which has not yet been named, is set to open in 2021. It will be the Prince William district's 17th middle school. Its address will be 17851 Woods View Drive, Dumfries, Va.

The campus has been designed to accommodate 1,491 students in grades six to eight.

SunCal, the master developer of Potomac Shores, donated 33 acres for the school and has been collaborating with district planners on site work. Plans for the Potomac Shores community call for more than 3,800 residences.

The campus will have nearly 200,000 square feet of floor space, and it will be the school system's first three-story middle school. The design calls for separate floors for each grade level, and each floor will have open, collaborative learning spaces.

The school also will have an 800-seat auditorium, other educational facilities and an enclosed courtyard surrounded by the various school buildings.

The architect is Moseley Architects, and the builder is V.F. Pavone Construction.
