Western Maricopa Education Center recently opened the first phase of its new 250,000-square-foot Southeast Campus— a career and technical education campus within the Phoenix metropolitan area is designed to connect education more directly with regional workforce demand. It also announced that it has broken ground on the second phase of the project during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for both milestones on July 21, with Phase I expected to welcome its first cohort of students this fall while Phase II is scheduled to open in fall 2027.
As a collaboration between West-MEC, DLR Group, and CHASSE Building Team, the campus is on a 30-acre site along the Loop 101 corridor in one of the fastest-growing economic areas in metro Phoenix. The design uses more than 1,000 feet of highway frontage to showcase student achievement and reinforce the connection between education and the region’s workforce needs.
Campus expands career pathways
The Southeast Campus is West-MEC’s fifth location and marks the fourth collaboration between West-MEC and DLR Group. Phase I launches career and technical education programs in healthcare, information technology, and advanced manufacturing, including medical assisting, physical therapy, cybersecurity, coding, and welding, while Phase II will add 80,000 square feet and expand the campus with additional programs in advanced health science, public safety, construction trades, energy systems, culinary arts, supply chain, and hospitality.
The second phase also includes nearly 12,000 square feet dedicated to construction trades, energy operations, and water systems programs, according to the announcement.
Design emphasizes workforce connections
“The Southeast Campus reflects West-MEC’s commitment to aligning education with the needs of a rapidly growing region,” said Matt Brehmer, principal and architect with DLR Group in a press release. “By delivering flexible, career-focused environments, the campus creates opportunities for students to gain real-world skills and connect directly with industry while supporting continued growth in the West Valley.”
Tim Goyette of CHASSE Building Team said the project is intended to help students gain hands-on experience in high-demand fields while strengthening Arizona’s future workforce.
