New York City acquires Queens parking lot for future high school site

Feb. 1, 2022
The city paid $24 million for the site, where it plans to build an 801-seat high school.

A parking lot in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens will become the site of a New York City high school.

The Commercial Observer reports the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA) bought the parking lot for $24 million and will build a 801-seat high school.

The SCA bought the site to carry out a plan to ease crowding at Queens high schools. The city plans to add about 6,200 high school seats across the borough.

The new school will be four blocks from Hillcrest High School

Other projects the SCA is taking on in Queens include adding an annex to the Francis Lewis High School Annex that will add 555 seats in 2022, an annex to Cardozo High School with 795 seats in 2023 and the expansion of the Northern Boulevard High School with 3,066 new seats, set to finish in 2025.

Plans call for the high school in the Jamaica neighborhood to open in September 2026.
