New York City is building a 572-seat elementary school in Staten Island
New York City is building an elementary school in Staten Island on land owned by the Catholic Church.
The Staten Island Advance reports that the 572-student school will rise on the St. Anthony of Padua rectory property in the Travis neighborhood. Plans for the school have been in the works since at least August 2018, when the city reached an agreement with the Archdiocese of New York to construct a school on the site.
The building will alleviate crowding at the nearby PS 26 The Carteret School, which has an enrollment of 292 students.According to documents from the city's School Construction Authority, the site consists of about 162,000 square feet, or 3.72 acres, of the St. Anthony of Padua complex. In addition to the former rectory, the property has gardens, lawn areas and unimproved lands.
Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2022 and will be completed in July 2025.
