Former college campus for sale in Vermont

June 19, 2019
Buyers are being sought for the 155-acre campus that was home to Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.

The 155-acre campus in Poultney, Vt., that was the home of Green Mountain College is up for sale.

The school closed its doors last month because of low enrollment and financial difficulties.

Colliers International’s Capital Markets, which is seeking to sell the campus, describes its availability as a unique turn-key opportunity.

The campus "comes fully furnished and equipped with 23 buildings," Colliers says.

The 450,000 square feet of space include residential space for 654 students, classrooms, administrative offices, lecture halls, cafeteria, student center, community space, library building, athletic facilities, a 400-seat theater, fine arts studios and galleries, a working farm, and guest residences.

Green Mountain College focused on environmental studies and emphasized its commitment to sustainability; the campus it is leaving behind will continue to be environmentally friendly. A campuswide biomass heating system installed in 2010 makes the campus 100% carbon neutral.

“What Green Mountain has created on its Poultney campus is a quintessential New England experience,” says Christopher Sower, a senior vice president with Collier's International. “While the college itself decided to close its doors following the Spring 2019 semester, I am confident we will identify a new user who appreciates and repurposes the quality infrastructure so thoughtfully put in place.”

College officials announced in January that the school was closing after 185 years. Administrators cited financial pressure stemming from declining enrollment brought about by the overall decline in college-age students across New England.
