The former schools director in Chattanooga, Tenn., will take the same job in Nashville next week for a $250,000 annual salary — and a year's severance pay if he's booted in favor of a state-installed replacement. The Metro Nashville school board unanimously approved a contract to hire Jesse Register under a three-year agreement. But Register might not serve even a year. Because of five years of failing to meet No Child Left Behind standards for student achievement, the state could remove him and the board and install replacements.
