Memphis-Shelby County board selects new superintendent
The Memphis-Shelby County (Tennessee) school board has selected an administrator from Detroit as its next district superintendent.
The board said in a news release that Marie Feagins, who now serves as Chief of Leadership and High Schools in the Detroit school system, is scheduled to begin her tenure in Memphis after the close of the 2023-24 school year.
Feagins emerged as the choice after a search that included input from the community, parents, teachers, and staff.
The other finalists for the job were Yolonda Brown, chief academic officer in the Atlanta district and Cheryl Proctor, deputy superintendent of instruction and school communities in the Portland (Oregon) district.
The 106,000-student school district has been without a permanent leader since July 2022, when Superintendent Joris Ray resigned. Toni Williams has served as the district's interim superintendent since August 2022.
Feagins received a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Samford University, an Education Specialist/Master of Education in School Counseling degree from the University of West Alabama, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama, and a Certificate in Education Finance from Georgetown University.
