March 19, 2012
Trend indicates that charter schools soon will claim 46% of public school population

From The Washington Post: Charter school enrollment in Washington, D.C., already 41 percent of the public school population, is expected to increase by 10 percent in 2013. Beyond that, it will likely slow to about six percent annually through 2015 then drop to two percent gains in 2016 and 2017. Enrollment in traditional public schools will stay flat for the next two years, then grow about 1.5 percent annually through 2017. If the numbers hold, charters will claim about 46 percent of the city’s public school population, and public school share will dwindle to 54 percent.
