The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, in its 11th annual report on the nation's largest charter school communities, identifies the public school districts where the greatest numbers of students are attending charter schools.
The Alliance says that in 2015-16, about 2.9 million students—about 6 percent of the nation's public school students—are enrolled in charter schools.
Seven districts have more than 50,000 students attending charters. The numbers show that 190 districts with more than 10,000 students have at least 10 percent of their students attending charter schools; 17 districts have more than 30 percent of their students attending charter schools, compared with only one when the Alliance began its report 11 years ago.
Two districts—Orleans Parish and Detroit—had more than half their students in charters in 2015-16.
Here are the 10 districts that had the most charter school students in 2015-16.
