From the 2025 Educational Interiors Showcase: Roosevelt Intermediate School, CAD/FAB Lab Renovation
Highlights
- The project repurposed an unused wood shop into a modern CAD/FAB Lab to support STEM education.
- Restoration preserved the historic character of the 1926 school building while incorporating new technology and finishes.
Roosevelt Intermediate School opened in 1926 in Westfield, New Jersey, and is identified as a Historic Site in the town's Historic Preservation Master Plan. Westfield Public Schools needed a modern space in the historic building for its STEM program, which had been operating in a classroom without appropriate power, equipment, storage and facilities. An unused wood shop was the ideal space for a STEM lab. The project restored the historic building’s character and incorporated modern technology, equipment and finishes, juxtaposing and highlighting new versus old.
