Federal officials say Wake County (N.C.) district can use income as factor in school attendance assignments

Federal officials have opened the door for the Wake County (N.C.) school district to use students’ family income as a basis for deciding which schools students will attend. The Raleigh News & Observer says U.S. Department of Agriculture attorneys have informed the district that it may use data on students who receive subsidized lunches to balance schools enrollment by family income as long as the process doesn’t result in the identification of individual students.
