Tennessee State University students dies from gunshot wound

Student, 19, was found wounded Sunday in a residence hall on the Nashville campus.

Tennessee State University student has died after he was found Sunday afternoon with a gunshot wound in a residence hall on the Nashville campus.

The Nashville Tennessean reports that campus police were notified Sunday that a 19-year-old student was found unconscious in a corridor of Watson Hall.

Police were investigating the shooting; it was not clear Monday if the shooting took place on campus.

Metro Nashville police Capt. Tommy Widener said the student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was found suffering from a gunshot wound in his abdomen.

"It is not known at this juncture how he sustained the (gunshot wound) to his person," Widener said.

Authorities say there have been no reports of a shooting or suspicious activity on campus.

"We are heartbroken by this loss and we grieve with the young man’s family and friends," the university said in the statement. "In times like these, we must come together and support each other as one university community. It is extremely important that if anyone has information to please report it to campus police immediately.” 

The shooting death came just one day before the university's homecoming kicked off.
