Three students were injured at a California elementary school after an air-conditioning fixture in the cafeteria detached and fell during lunchtime.

The Sacramento Bee reports that the incident occurred at Ellen Feickert Elementary School in the Elk Grove Unified School District.

In a letter to families, the district said students were eating in the cafeteria on June 5 when a metal register plate struck one student directly and injured two others.

Emergency personnel responded, and all three pupils were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Staff and outside safety inspectors were investigating the equipment failure, the district said.

"We are committed to identifying and resolving any issues before students return to that area of the building," the district said in the letter.
