The shooting occurred outside a gymnasium where 600 students and others were attending a basketball game.

Two men were shot to death Tuesday night outside a New Orleans high school while the school's gym was filled with 600 people watching a basketball game.

The victims have not been identified, but police say neither was a current student at the school.

WWL-TV reports that more than a dozen bullets flew in the parking of the Edna Karr High campus in the Algiers neighborhood.

New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison says the two male victims had been turned away as they tried to enter the game, possibly because the gym was at capacity. As they got back to their car, a silver sedan drove by with several people inside. Shots rang out and the car took off.

One of the victims died on the scene. The other died later at the hospital.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. as teams from Karr and McDonogh 35 High Schools played a basketball game.

"They were sitting in the car when someone opened fire on them," Harrison says. "One subject got out of the car and collapsed there."

After the shooting, the school gym was put on lockdown.

Classes proceeded on a regular schedule Wednesday for Karr's 1,100 students; counselors were on site for students who have been affected by the shooting.
