Armed student wounds 2 other students at Great Mills High in St. Mary's County; gunman is fatally shot

A student is dead after he student shot two other students at a high school in Maryland, authorities say.

CNN reports the shooting occurred just before the start of classes at 7:55 a.m. in a hallway at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, Md.

St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron says the school's resource officer fired at the armed student, and the student fired a shot at about the same time. The armed student was fatally wounded. Two students were wounded—a male student 14, is in stable condition, and a female student,16, is in the intensive care unit of a local hospital with life-threatening injured. The resource officer was not injured.

Authorities identified the dead student as Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17. The identities of the wounded students have not been disclosed. Cameron says that Rollins has a prior relationship with the wounded girl, but in the early stages of the investigation, it had not been determined if that was a motive in the shooting.

The school was on lockdown after the shooting; officials with the St. Mary's County district said the incident had been contained and there was no further threat.

Great Mills High School has an enrollment of a little more than 1,500 students.

Parents of Great Mills students were told to meet their children at a reunification site at Leonardtown High School.

Last Wednesday, Great Mills students participated in a nationwide “school walkout” on the one-month anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Fla. The students called for an end to gun violence and more school safety measures.

One of the student activists from Marjory Stoneman Douglas tweeted her anger about the Great Mills incident.

“Less than a WEEK ago Great Mills High School students walked out with us to protest gun they’re experiencing it for themselves,” Jaclyn Corin wrote. “The state of our country is disgusting - I’m so sorry, Great Mills.”
