States with the highest per-pupil public school revenue, 2017-18

States in the Northeast make up the majority of the states.

The amount spent per pupil for public elementary and secondary education for all 50 states and the District of Columbia increased to $12,612 per pupil in fiscal 2018, according to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau.

That is a 3.4% increase over the $12,201 per pupil spent on average in fiscal 2017.

Schools in the Northeast region of the United States spend the most per pupil. Seven of 10 highest-spending states are in the Northeast, topped by New York, which spent $24,040 per pupil in 2017-18.
