Springfield (Mass.) district breaks ground on a $95 million elementary school consolidation project

Sept. 29, 2021
The new school will replace two existing elementary campuses, but will have separate entrances.

The Springfield (Mass.) district is consolidating two elementary schools under one roof.

DeBerry-Homer Elementary School will replace two schools that were built in 1898 and 1951, reports Mass Live

The $95 million project is being funded with money from the city and the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The MSBA will provide $66.4 million for the project.

The three-story, 155,000-square-foot school will serve about 800 elementary students and an additional 120 pre-kindergarten students.

The De-Berry-Homer campus will have separate entrances, but will share common areas such as the gymnasium, library and cafeteria-auditorium.

The new school is being built on the existing DeBerry School property. The existing DeBerry building will remain in use during construction. It will be demolished in August 2024 to make way for a parking lot.

The school is set to open in 2023.

Dinisco Design is the architect for the project and Fontaine Bros Inc. is the contractor.
