MIT penalized for environmental violations

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has agreed to spend $550,000 in penalties and community projects to settle charges of environmental violations in its research labs. It has also agreed to build a "virtual campus" to help teach other universities how to handle hazardous waste without violating the law. The Environmental Protection Agency has cracked down on college labs in the past few years. MIT is charged with storing volatile compounds together and had not conducting weekly inspections or labeling waste properly.
