Made in the shade
Solar mesh system lightens heat load of academic center, reducing energy consumption
Cambridge Architectural. The $7.1 million, 22,000-square-foot William G. McGowan Academic Center at Capital College, Laurel, Md., is home to the Space Operations Institute, built in partnership with NASA to prepare students for careers in the space industry. It also includes multimedia classrooms, technical laboratories, a conference center, and offices for faculty and administrators.
To reduce light pollution for the interior lobby area of the academic center, the college used about 1,600 square feet of a solar mesh system to shade the building's exterior. The custom plait metal fabric pattern contains large-scaled, open weaves that shade and screen structures. Frame attachment hardware was custom-designed and used to install the plait product. An angle bar frames expanses of metal fabric with a combination of welded and mechanical connections.
The shading system reduces the building's heat load, cooling requirements and energy consumption.
Geier Brown Renfrow Architects, Alexandria, Va., was the architect for this project.

Preliminary walkthrough
Virtual tour on school website enables parents and prospective students to tour facility from home
Motion VR, LLC. Bay Haven Charter Academy, Panama City, Fla., a K-8 facility, has added a virtual tour to its website. Parents and prospective students can obtain a realistic view of the academy without being on-site.
Using high-tech, yet simple navigation tools, visitors to the school's website can walk into different areas of the school, including classrooms, through hallways and doorways, and out onto the playground. Users can stop at any point to obtain a 360-degree perspective of a room in the school and view a photo and description of featured information.
“The enhanced website enables parents and prospective students to get a much better sense of our academic offerings and amenities, without ever leaving the comfort of their home,” says Tim Kitts, principal. “In fact, website viewers have been so impressed with the online tours that they have been prompted to visit in person, and we are already receiving applications from out-of-state students.”

Water drop
Water meter data shows dual-flush technology reduces water usage by 43 percent
Sloan Valve Company. When Michael Carson, senior mechanical engineer at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., was offered the chance to test Sloan's UPPERCUT dual-flush Flushometers at the university's main campus, he was curious whether they would make a difference.
Initially, the university decided to retrofit the women's restrooms in two of its administrative buildings with 12 UPPERCUT dual-flush handles. The dual-flush technology is available as part of a complete Flushometer or in handle retrofit kits for converting existing manual Flushometers to water-efficient, dual-flush capability. The dual-flush handle offers users two flush options: tilt the handle up to flush with 1.1 gallons (gpf) of water, or push it down for a standard 1.6-gpf flush. Basic usage instructions are shown on signs, which come with the handles and are mounted on restroom walls.
Carson and his team have closely examined the monthly water-usage data from the buildings' water meters, and the figures show that in one building, water usage dropped from an average of 10,228 gallons a month from July 2004 to June 2005 (before installation) to 5,803 gallons a month from July 2006 to June 2007 (after installation) — about a 43 percent decrease. In another building, it dropped from about 12,229 gallons a month from July 2004 to June 2005 to 8,622 gallons from July 2006 to June 2007 — a total median decrease of almost 30 percent. Some single-month comparisons show a yield drop of more than 50 percent.
Based on Purdue's water cost of 91.7 cents per 1,000 gallons and its wastewater cost of $5.34 per 1,000 gallons, the reduced utility costs mean the dual-flush handles would pay for themselves in less than a year.

Easy on the eye
Video-management system creates a trouble-free solution for capturing and viewing surveillance video
Wren. Until recently, the video surveillance equipment at Jefferson City High School (JCHS), Jefferson City, Mo., consisted of a few analog video cameras. Staff members found that the security system was outdated and failed to provide quality video images and easy access to video files.
To address these limitations, the school installed more cameras in high-traffic areas including hallways, cafeterias and outdoor walkways. The administration employed Wren Video Management System (VMS) software to make it easy to retrieve, view and share video images being captured from so many vital points on campus.
“After progressing through the initial learning curve, we were quickly able to realize the benefits of our new network video system,” says Julia Koch, assistant principal.
The old security system was limited primarily to post-incident investigations, but the new network video system is used to identify potential problems and correct them. In addition, the school uses the video system to monitor and evaluate student and staff performance during emergency drills for fires and tornadoes. Watching the evacuation process live enables administrators to time evacuations and provide specific recommendations to staff.
