Upgraded student center earns LEED Gold at Ferris State University
The renovated University Center at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Mich., has received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The facility upgrade transformed the former Rankin Student Center, which was built in 1957, into the University Center. The building underwent a $34 million overhaul and opened in January 2015.
Sustainable elements of the building include installation of energy-efficient plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems and a main fireplace made from limestone repurposed from campus residence halls.
The university has established a goal of achieving at least a LEED Silver rating for all new campus buildings and major renovations.
