Michigan's largest solar array is coming to MSU

Solar parking bays will be installed at 5 lots on the East Lansing campus

The Michigan State University Board of Trustees has authorized school officials to proceed with installation of solar arrays on five parking lots on the East Lansing campus.

The university says the solar panel parking bays are expected to generate up to 10 megawatts of power for the campus, about 1/6 the amount used on campus during peak hours. The installation will be the largest solar array in the state, The Lansing State Journal reports.

The array will cost between $25 and $30 million. The bays will have more than 13 feet of clearance so that RVs and other tall vehicles will be able to park under them.

Officials hope to see construction begin on the array’s foundation later this year over the winter break.
