Students at Newburyport High School in Massachusetts have secured a $4,000 grant to install filtered water dispensers in the school.
The grant was secured by members of the school’s environmental club in an effort to reduce the number of water bottles that the students use and dispose of at the school each day.
Students already had the option to refill their bottles using the school’s sinks and water fountains, but they complained that the tap water did not taste good.
Students in the environmental club are optimistic that now that filtered water will be available, their classmates will be more willing to use reusable water bottles as opposed to single use options that are available for purchase at the school.
The group hopes to install water dispensers in high traffic areas near the cafeteria and by the gym. With the addition of a filter, the devices can cost anywhere from $750 to $2,000, according to the Newburyport Daily News.
