Nine higher-education institutions were designated last fall as Bicycle Friendly Universities by the League of America Bicyclists.
The organization says 44 colleges now have received the bike-friendly label. Among the new designees: Yale University, University of Utah, Princeton University and the University of Kentucky.
Schools apply to become part of the program, and the applications are reviewed by a panel of national bicycle experts and local reviewers. The program honors institutions that promote and provide a more bicycle-friendly campus for students, staff and visitors. The league also offers technical assistance to schools in the program to provide better conditions for cycling on campuses.
Universities can receive designations at the bronze, silver, gold and platinum level. Two campuses—University of California, Davis, and University of California, Santa Barbara—have received gold designations, and only one—Stanford University, which accommodates more than 13,000 bicycles on campus every day—is recognized at the platinum level.
