The Colorado School of Mines in Golden will break ground next week on the CoorsTek Center for Applied Science and Engineering, an interdisciplinary academic and research facility.

The school says the $50 million center will be built on campus on the site of the former physics building.

The facility will support the school's College of Applied Science and Engineering and will be home for the physics department.

The nearly 100,000-square-foot building will have flexible lab space and technologically advanced classrooms to foster interactive, hands-on learning.

CoorsTek, a manufacturer of engineered ceramics and other industrial products, and the Coors family have committed $27 million to establish a research partnership and help pay for construction of the center.

The architects are Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and Anderson Mason Dale Architects.
