University of Rhode Island breaks ground on housing for 1,100 students

Two residence halls will house 914 students, and the Graduate Village complex is being rebuilt to house 200.

The University of Rhode Island in Kingston has begun construction on an on-campus student housing development that will add more than 1,100 beds and help address the growing demand for housing.

Providence Business News reports that the project will consist of two new undergraduate residence halls with apartment-style suites on the northwest side of campus, along with reconstruction of the Graduate Village Apartments.

The university is partnering with the university and Gilbane Development Co. on the project.

The first new residence hall is scheduled to open in August 2027.

The university says the new residence halls will add 914 new beds and feature two- and four-bedroom apartment units. Amenities will include expanded study spaces and common areas, community wellness rooms, a grab-and-go cafe, and an outdoor courtyard space with walking and bike paths. 

The rebuilt Graduate Village complex will increase occupancy for graduate students to 200 once completed. It will have a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment units; a revived community garden; and an enhanced community center.
