Full Sail University plans to break ground later this year on its first student housing project across the street from its Winter Park, Florida, campus.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the first phase is planned to have 580 beds. Two additional, already approved phases eventually could push the total past 2,000.

Full Sail is a private, for-profit university which specializes in the media and entertainment industries. It says it has more than 20,000 students, including those taking online courses.

The planned five-story building will have a central courtyard with an outdoor pool and lounge space, along with a nearly 15,000-square-foot clubhouse and some room for retail. It will have 182 housing units including 15 one-bedroom, 29 two-bedroom, 45 three-bedroom, and 93 four-bedroom units.

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners has approved the first phase development plan.

Full Sail University owns the 13.14-acre property, and Nvision Development will manage the operation of the student housing community once it is complete.

The initial phase will use the back of the property as surface-level parking for students. Structured parking would be necessary to accommodate the density planned in future phases.

A planned pedestrian bridge over University Boulevard will connect the student housing with the main campus.
